The following two bars contain 256 unique shades between black and white allowed by HTML. Unfortunately, many screens are not capable of displaying the subtle differences in shades.
In fact, if you were to strictly following the constraints of 216 "web-safe" colours, available to monitors set at 256 colours, many browsers can only display the following 6 shades of gray:

This is a blue bar with 256 shades
As you can see from the above, HTML actually allows upto 256 shades of each of the primary colours. If you were to add up all the permutations, you get effectively 2563 or 16,777,216 colours, also commonly referred to in Windows as "Millions of colours".
